One Planet Cities during a climate of cultural change

This event is an exploration of 3 topics connected to One Planet Cities:

  • Capital (economics) and learning from the Reniassance.
  • Time (larger spans of time- 30yrs-climate, 200yrs/7 generations and the fractal nature pf time)
  • Elders and their role in a city

The topics will be explored through E.F. Schumacher's 4 fields of knowledge (internal-external, individual-collective) as outlined in a "Guide for the Perplexed".

History of One Planet Cities project so far

2012-17: One Planet Bristol 1.0, an action research project. Highlights included high street fayres (2012-2014) with ripple effects reaching COP21 in Paris, 2015. A good example of system change and how small events can have a bigger impact (in Yr 1: street party on Chris Richards's street, Yr 2-high street fayre, south Bristol, Yr 3-Bristol city centre event, Yr 4-Bristol mayor at Champs Elysees street party with Paris mayor before COP21).

2015. Organised event for Stephen Jenkinson (founder of Orphan Wisdom School) during Bristol's year as European Green Capital, 2015 to talk about Old Time: Honour for Elders as part of his UK book tour: Die Wise, A Manifesto for Sanity & Soul (short video clip for book).

2015: Peers launch film Planetary in Bristol. 

2016: One Planet Bristol is named one of seven projects transforming the city in the Bristol Method by KPMG as a blueprint for other cities to follow. 

2019- present: Chris Richards writing book "One Planet Cities" and aims to complete draft winter 2024/25.

2022: First live test event, One Planet Hastings using the four pathways of creation spirituality as a framework.

2023: Interviewed Stephen Jenkinson as the first elder for the One Planet Cities project.

Chris Richards works in community energy, mental health and as a holistic counsellor. He has 20 years experience in starting and supporting grassroots community sustainability projects and was part of the first cohort of The Schumacher Institute's "Systems Thinking for Sustainability" post graduate course. He lives in Hastings by the sea and enjoys road cycling, contemplation and has a BSc Natural Sciences.

There will be a 30 min presentation followed by 30-45 min discussion/Q&A.
