Drakes Island Swim 2022

Jul 3, 2022 at 06:00 — 11:30 (BST)
Organiser: The Chestnut Appeal for Men's Health

The 2022 Drakes Island swim will take place on Sunday 3rd July with a swim time of around 08.30am

The swim starts on the beach at Firestone Bay with swimmers setting out for the Island, round a marker buoy and making their way back to the beach a distance of around 1.5km.

We ask that all participants are able to swim the distance in a pool, have experience of swimming in Open Water and in varying sea conditions.

Registration for the swim will take place in the Royal William Yard.

The £35 entry fee covers the cost of organising the event and the safety cover, but it’s the money you raise that helps Prostate Cancer patients and their families across Devon and Cornwall.

So we ask all our swimmers set themselves a Sponsorship target of at least £50.  Drakes Island Swim justgiving

Drakes Island

Situated in Plymouth Sound between Plymouth and the Cornish Coast, Drakes Island has been a place of pilgrimage, a refuge, a fort, a prison, an observatory and an adventure centre. Drake’s Island has had a colourful and chequered past. The mysterious six-acre island, a short hop across the water from Plymouth Hoe, is clearly visible from the shore but has been out of bounds to the public for more than thirty years.  The island, which is in the middle of the UK’s first national marine park, has now been bought by local businessman Morgan Phillips who's vision for Drakes island is in keeping with the island’s importance as a national monument and it will be a ‘green’ development, a plastic-free environment which makes use of renewable wave and tidal energy.
